O Level (IT Course)

The NIELIT O Level (IT Course) is a foundation-level professional certification course recognized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. It is equivalent to an Advanced Diploma in Computer Applications and is widely required for various government jobs, technical posts, and administrative roles (such as Computer Operators, Junior Programmers, and Data Entry Assistants)

1. Course Overview & Structure

• Conducted By: NIELIT (National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology) (formerly DOEACC Society).

• Eligibility: 10+2 pass or an ITI certificate (after 10th).

• Duration: 1 Year (divided into two semesters, though students can fast-track and appear for all modules).

• Exam Frequency: Twice a year—typically in January and July.

2. Current Syllabus (Revision R5 / R5.1)

The curriculum focuses heavily on modern application tools, open-source software, and practical programming:

• M1-R5.1: Information Technology Tools and Network Basics

  • Computer fundamentals, OS (Windows/Linux), and hardware/peripherals.

  • Office productivity tools: LibreOffice (Writer, Calc, Impress).

  • Computer networks, internet navigation, e-Governance services (UMANG, Digilocker), and Digital Financial Tools (UPI, RTGS, NEFT).

  • Overview of Cyber Security and Future Skills (AI, IoT, Cloud Computing).

• M2-R5.1: Web Designing & Publishing

  • Basics of web design, architecture, and web browsers.

  • HTML5, CSS3, and framework introductions (like W3.CSS).

  • Client-side scripting with JavaScript and basic AngularJS.

  • Image editing tools and publishing websites to local/web servers.

• M3-R5.1: Programming and Problem Solving through Python

  • Introduction to programming concepts, algorithms, and flowcharts.

  • Python syntax: Data types, control statements, loops, and functions.

  • Data structures (Lists, Tuples, Dictionaries) and file handling.

• M4-R5.1: Internet of Things (IoT) and its Applications

  • Introduction to IoT, smart devices, and applications.

  • Basics of electronics, sensors (e.g., LDR, temperature/humidity sensors), and actuators.

  • Microcontroller boards (such as Arduino) and interfacing.

  • Open-source cloud platforms for IoT.

3. Examination & Marking Pattern

The assessment for each module is divided into an objective theory exam and a practical evaluation:

• Theory Exam (Online / OMR Based):

  • Questions: 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

  • Duration: 2 Hours.

  • Marking: 1 mark per question. No negative marking.

  • Weightage: Contributes 60% to the final score.

• Practical Exam & Viva:

  • Structure: Hands-on lab execution of problems (Python coding, HTML/CSS design, LibreOffice tasks, or IoT circuit simulation) followed by a Viva-Voce.

  • Weightage: Contributes 40% to the final score.

  • Passing Criteria: Minimum 33% independently in both Theory and Practical, with an aggregate total of at least 50% to pass a module.

  • Project Work: A mandatory project submission is required after clearing all four papers to successfully claim the final O Level certificate.
